Vitae

Dr. Cross’s research interests are in the field of Ferroelectric materials and their applications as dielectrics in capacitors and as piezoelectric and electrostrictive transducers and actuators for medical ultrasound and undersea communication. His work on the phenomenology of ferroelectricity and specifically on the special group of materials known as Relaxor Ferroelectrics has received international recognition.

Professor Cross received his Bachelor of Science (honors) and his Ph.D. in Physics from Leeds University. Before coming to Penn State, he was a University Scholar, Assistant Professor, and ICI Fellow at Leeds University, and a Senior Scientist at the Electrical Research Association (ERA) in England.

Dr. Cross joined the faculty at Penn State in 1961 as a Research Associate in Ceramics, then became a Senior Research Associate and Professor of Solid State Science in the Materials Research Laboratory, before joining the faculty of Electrical Engineering and becoming an Evan Pugh Professor. His broad background is particularly appropriate for the interdisciplinary studies required to enable new programs in ferroelectric materials and devices.

Dr. Cross is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, a fellow of the American Institute of Physics, the American Physical Society, the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), and the American Optical Society. He is also a member of the Defense Sciences Research Council (DSRC) which is the senior academic advisory group to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). He is also one of the two permanent members of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) advisory group on ferroelectricity.

Dr. Cross has published more than 540 articles on topics in ferroelectricity and holds some 12 patents.
