Vitae

John F. Doherty is currently Professor of Electrical Engineering at Penn State University. He joined the faculty of Penn State University as Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering in the Fall of 1996. Previous academic positions include a term as Assistant Professor and Harpole Pentair Fellow of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Iowa State University from 1990 to 1996. He was subsequently promoted to Associate Professor with tenure at Iowa State University in 1996. Before that, he was a Member of Technical Staff at AT&T Bell Laboratories from 1985 to 1990 and Engineer at IBM Corporation from 1982 to 1984.

John Doherty’s research interests are in the broad areas of signal processing and communications, which includes specific applications to remote sensing, electronic intelligence, and biomedical engineering. Part of his collaborative work with faculty in Electrical Engineering focuses on data analysis for remote sensing of the lower atmosphere. Currently, this work is funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation under the Information Technology Research Program. Doherty also develops new electronic intelligence and surveillance technologies for homeland security in collaboration with the Applied Research Laboratory. In this capacity he has participated in numerous research activities funded by the Department of Defense.

Doherty was selected as a Young Investigator by the Army Research Office and served as the Charles H. Fetter University Endowed Faculty Fellow in Electrical Engineering at Penn State University.
