Vitae John D. Mathews directs the Communications
and Spaces Laboratory, a Center of Excellence in the Penn State College
of Engineering, and teaches in the areas of plasma physics, upper atmosphere/ionosphere
physics, and radar. His current research interests center on middle atmospheric
processes including layering, waves and tides, electrodynamics, and meteor
physics. He has continuously conducted research at Arecibo Observatory
since 1969 and has continuously held NSF
grants for observational research at AO since 1975. He has served the National
Astronomy and Ionosphere Center in many capacities including consultant
in various activities, member of the Arecibo
Scientific Advisory Committee, and recently as member and chairman
of the Arecibo Advisory Board and Visitors Committee. He is a member of
the American Geophysical Union, URSI (International Union of Radio Sciences)
Commissions G and H, IEEE (senior), European Geophysical Society, the Division
for Planetary Sciences of the American Astronomical Society, Sigma Xi,
Eta Kappa Nu, NFPA
(National Fire Protection Association), ISAST (International Society for
the Arts, Sciences andTechnology).
