Vitae

Ralph Powell joined Penn State in 1992 and is Director of the Advanced School in Power Engineering located in Monroeville. He previously spent 36 years with the Westinghouse Electric Corparation and ABB in a wide variety of technical, line managment, and executive management positions involved with radio interference, URD sytems, network power supply, insulation coordination, lightning protection, system modeling, long range expansion planning, switching surge analysis, engineering economics, gas turbine power plant design, and technical software. He is a registered professional engineer in Pennsylvania, a Fellow of the IEEE, has held several national IEEE offices, and has authored 51 technical papers including the IEEE Power Engineering Society prize paper in 1966. His paper on lightning protection of power distribution systems has long been an industry standard.
