Initiation Information

Please bring the new member form to initiation.

New Member Initiation Requirements:

1. Completion of pledge book (see below).

2. Payment of one-time initiation fee of $75. If the fee is a problem, please speak to an HKN officer or to the faculty advisor, Dr. John Mitchell. Checks should be made payable to Eta Kappa Nu and delivered to 121 EE East building.

3. The completion of an activity event. This could include volunteering at specified events or helping out Eta Kappa Nu with additional projects. Contact the president, Mohit Khadaria, for more information.

4. Completion of the tutoring requirement. That is, each initiate must schedule at least one session tutoring with Eta Kappa Nu within the semester. Contact the tutoring officer, Michael Barry for more information.

Pledge Book Requirements:

The completion of the pledge book is one of the fundamental requirements that must be met in order to become a member of the Epsilon Chapter of Eta Kappa Nu. It represents a continuation of the traditional pledge requirements which have existed since the founding of the Epsilon Chapter in 1909.

Construction:

The pledge book can be be made of any material and can be of any size. Its pages must be bound together within a cover -- loose pages are not acceptable. The pledge book should be typed.

No matter how the pledge book is constructed, it should show a measure of care, precision, and pride that will be expected of you as a professional electrical or computer engineer.

Contents

The required of the pledge book are as follows:

1. Cover Page: The cover page must include the following: "Eta Kappa Nu," "Epsilon Chapter," "Pledge Book," your name, the initiation date, and the HKN shield. To include a color image of the HKN shield, you may use this one.

2. The Preamble to the Constitution of the Eta Kappa Nu Association (provided below):

Preamble

That those in the profession of Electrical or Computer Engineering
who by their attainments in college or in practice, have manifested a
deep interest and marked ability in their chosen life work, may be
brought into closer union so as to foster a spirit of liberal culture
in the engineering colleges and to mark in an outstanding manner
those who, as students in Electrical or Computer Engineering, have
conferred honor on their Alma Maters by distinguished scholarship,
activities, leadership and exemplary character and to aid these
students to progress through association with alumni who have
attained prominence, we do hereby ordain and establish the following
Constitution.

 

3. Article II, Sections 1 - 6 of the Eta Kappa Nu Constitution (provided below):

Article II

NAME, SYMBOL, PUBLICATION
Section 1. Name. This organization shall be known as the Eta Kappa Nu Association, often referred to as Eta Kappa Nu.

Section 2. Symbol. The symbol shall be the early form of the Greek letters Eta, Kappa, and Nu. Use of the symbols HKN shall b permitted.

Section 3. Colors. Colors of the Association shall be navy-blue and scarlet.

Section 4. Emblem. The Emblem of the Association shall be the Wheatstone bridge.

Section 5. Publication. The official publication shall be called THE BRIDGE, which shall be published at least four times each year.

Section 6. Geographic Regions. There shall be four geographic regions, with boundaries and names established by The Board.

 

4. Your Pledge Essay: A short (approximately one page) essay on the topic, "How is your major helping to prepare you to become a World Class Engineer? In what ways could this be improved?"

5. Signatures

You must procure the following signatures for your pledge book (Please have spaces for both printed and signed names):

  • All Eta Kappa Nu Officers (7 total)
  • The Eta Kappa Nu Faculty Advisor (Dr. John Mitchell)
  • 10 EE or CSE Faculty Members
  • 6 Active Members of the Epsilon Chapter of Eta Kappa Nu
  • 10 Epsilon Chapter Pledges
  • Signature of the Tutoring Chair (Michael Barry) indicating completion of the tutoring requirement.
  • Signature of the President (Mohit Khadaria) indicating completion of the activity requirement.
  • Signature of the treasurer (Katie Fox) indicating payment of the initiation fee
